Moving On Workshops

#These workshops were devised as part of an anti-bullying programme for pupils in the Markham area of Caerphilly. One of the identified pupils’ concerns with bullying is centred on the period of transition from primary to secondary school. It was decided that an effective way of giving pupils opportunities to express and explore their fears openly was through drama experiences delivered to years 6 and 7 within the cluster of schools. The workshops utilise proven successful teaching methods which centre on the children's needs and experiences.

The new Framework for Personal and Social Education in Wales emphasises the need for a 'coordinated holistic approach' that involves 'teaching and learning strategies which use interactive and experiential approaches'. Drama is the ideal method to accommodate these requirements.

This two hour session was delivered to all year 6 and 7 pupils in the cluster of schools. The common experience ensured that all pupils were given an opportunity to analyse the problems that may be associated with transition from primary to secondary school. It is hoped that the workshop can be used by teachers with their own classes and is described, for that purpose, below.

Following the workshops a group of selected pupils representing both age groups worked in more detail on the themes and ideas that came out of the initial sessions. This culminated in the filming of samples of pupils' work which is available for use in schools as an educational and training resource and accompanies this booklet.

At a later period, year six pupils who are about to attend the secondary school, along with their older schoolmates will see a performance of Gwent Theatre's The Wounded Angel which further develops the work on better relationships and anti-bullying. The play, by Philip Michell, and its accompanying workshop and education resource pack, deal specifically with the issues.
