Milly and the Minotaur
Milly and the Minotaur is a play about the relationship between myth, reality and the imagination. The story of Theseus and the minotaur resounds down the ages and still holds our interest today. The story of a fearsome beast that haunts the labyrinth fascinates us and children still enjoy its re-telling. Much has been written about the myth and post-Freudian interpretations abound; one Jungian psycho-therapist even compares Theseus’ ball of string to the process of psycho-therapy itself whereby we face our fears with the support of a counsellor.
In our play it is the Minotaur himself who aids the young girl in the traumatic periods of illness, hospitalisation and medical treatment. It is her own imaginative re-creation of the beast as a benevolent friend that gets her through the experience. The power of the imagination is forceful in theatre as in life and Gwent Theatre has always advocated its central role in education.
