Son of Man – Melville Theatre, Abergavenny
Whether you are a believer or not, this contemporary story of Christ by the Gwent Young People’s Theatre left you drained of emotion.
A highly charged performance by Bethan Witcomb as Jesus could not fail to move the hugely appreciative audience as she delivered the words written by Dennis Potter, set in the 60s yet sticking carefully to the oldest story of all.
These were emotional scenes when Peter (Layla Peploe), Andrew (Alison Price), James (Sophie Morgan) and John (scarlet Brown) joined Jesus in spreading the word, and when Caiaphas (Leo Jofeh) delivered the death sentence on Jesus after he had turned his anger on the money lenders in the temple.
Leo was masterful, and Leighton Martin gave another commanding performance as Pontius Pilate, after winning critical acclaim in his recent role of Sweeney Todd.
Hywel Vaughan as the commander, Jamie Stokes as the captain, Bethan Haycock as Judas, Jenny Johnson and Emma Humphries as the priests, Nia Statham and Sophie Forbes-Nash as the money lenders and Emma Humphries as Ruth added strength to an impressive production.
Delivering the Passion Play in a contemporary setting cannot have been easy for director Chris Durnall and his assistant Lisa Harris, but they managed to do it magnificently, without losing any of the original drama of the greatest story ever told.
